n its latest 2025 World Report, Human Rights Watch highlights the ongoing deterioration of freedom of expression in Venezuela. The organization states:
“The authorities have stigmatized, harassed, and repressed the media, often closing critical outlets.”
This repression is not isolated. According to Espacio Público, a Venezuelan free-speech organization, there were 507 violations of the right to freedom of expression between January and August 2025. These included 168 cases of intimidation, 101 cases of censorship, and 65 cases of judicial harassment.
The situation intensified around the electoral period in July, when most violations were recorded. During these months:

19 press workers were detained by security forces.

The national telecommunications authority closed 15 radio stations.

Authorities blocked at least 35 digital news and NGO websites, as well as major platforms like X, Wikipedia, and the encrypted messaging app Signal.
These findings underline the severe challenges facing independent media, journalists, and civil society in Venezuela today.
